Lovers of live music should make sure they catch one of the exciting Popscene Live events that are held each month at various venues around the city. Popscene is now in its fourth year and is dedicated to bringing great tunes and live bands to the people of Bangkok.

The concept of Popscene live.

Popscene Live is an energy charged night of live music that is provided by local bands and solo artists as well as artists that come from all over the world. Popscene is championed by London boy Matt, who is also the front man of the popular Bangkok-based band The Standards. Matt really knows his stuff when it comes to music and each of the bands that perform at Popscene Live has been handpicked to ensure that they offer something a bit different while being real crowd pleasers at the same time.

One of the great things about Popscene Live is that all of the bands are encouraged to play original tunes, which provides a vibrant alternative to the usual covers bands that tend to infest the nightlife scene in Bangkok.

A great mix of music.

The last Popscene Live event was held at Apoteke on Thong Lor Soi 12 and featured sets from Local Machine, Tabasco and the Jogging Boys as well as sets from DJ Yark. Apoteke was the perfect venue to host the event and all of the sets went down well. Some of the other big names that have played at Popscene Live in the past include The Young Knives from the UK, Thee Oh Sees and Cold Caves (both from the USA), The King Khan from Canada, energy charged rockabilly band The Klong Riders and Malaysian band the Free Deserters, who have just released their first album and are making quite a name for themselves as the next band to watch. If you missed Popscene Live this time around don’t despair, as the next events will be held on September 13th and 20th.

In addition to Popscene Live, the team also runs other special music events such as BACKBEAT, which is a month event that offers authentic music from the 60s and 70s. This is a good opportunity to get your groove on and dance the night away to tasty tunes including northern soul, rockabilly, R&B and rock and roll.

Large turnouts and no entry fee!

Despite the overwhelming enthusiasm from local artists, Popscene would be nothing without is dedicated group of music lovers. As Matt says “I can organise events until the cows come home, but the support from the public needs to keep coming.” Fortunately, Popscene Live regularly receives large turnouts from a diverse crowd of people that range from aging rockers and young expats to trendy Thai socialites and professional musicians. Entry to most Popscene events is free of charge, making this a good value night out that everyone can enjoy together.

If you are in a band and are looking for somewhere to play, simply visit Popscene’s Facebook page and drop the guys a line or email them at If they like what they hear, you too could be strutting your stuff on stage at the next Popscene Live event.
