Bangkok has one of the best bar scenes in the world. It’s not even up for debate. 7 nights a week, 52 weeks a year, there is a plethora of party scenes to be discovered, from the slick hotel and rooftop bars, to the bustling beer bars, big banging clubs, and dazzling gogo complexes, there is something for every taste and occasion.
A selection of great live music venues.
However what makes a good city nightlife great is it’s live music scene. While Bangkok might not compare to musical cities such as London, Detroit, New York, or Rio, it still has a pumping live music scene which encumbers a variety of styles and settings. To help you discover the best of Bangkok’s live music here is a brief guide to some of our favourite venues:
Adhere the 13th Blues Bar – Samsen Road
A small bar with a huge reputation, Adhere the 13th is Bangkok’s go to venue for the best local blues acts. The house band ‘Bangkok Connection’ will take you through their favourite covers, including Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, and Ella Fitzgerald classics, playing from around 9 PM until midnight. This is a very cool and friendly hangout, and a must visit for blues lovers.
Saxophone Pub – Victory Monument
One of the cornerstones of the Bangkok live music scene, Saxophone has been rocking the city since back in 1987. Best known for its jazz and blues bands, today Saxophone host bands of a variety of genres including reggae and country, and regular performances from T-Bone, one of Bangkok’s best ska bands. It’s a very chilled and friendly venue, more like a local pub than a dedicated music venue, with a decent menu of food for anyone with the munchies.
Parking Toys – Kaset Nawamin
A little off the beaten track, Parking Toys is worth the extra trek for fans of indie rock and arty settings. With lots of retro fittings and quirky furniture, the decor and clientele are as cool as the suburban rock and indie pop that fills the room. It’s also known to attract some of the best new Thai rock talent around.
Brick Bar – Khao San Road
Among the hippy hangouts and dirty dives of Khao San Road, backpacker HQ, you’ll find the cavern-esque live music venue known as Brick Bar, home to some of Bangkok’s best ska, funk, and reggae music. The cellar bar is actually pretty big and pulls in a good crowd of Thais and Khao San tourists, making for a fun and lively vibe.
Bangkok Beat – Sukhumvit Soi 7/1
If you find yourself spilling out onto Sukhumvit Road late at night in need for an alternative from the usual clubs and curb side bars, Bangkok Beat is a live music venue playing a diverse mix of rock, pop, R&B, funk, and hip hop, as well as lot of oldies and a DJ plugging the gaps between sets. Expect to find a lots of lobe hungry locals looking for a late night date, but the music is pretty good.
