Holiday Paradise in the City
It is perhaps not the area that immediately springs to mind when thinking about clubbing in Bangkok, but being home to the new and popular Velvet nightclub and also one of the latest offerings, Ocean Urban Lounge and Boutique Resort Club (opened in November 2013), means that Sukhumvit 33 is certainly becoming a nightspot that is worth keeping in a mind for a visit.
To get to Sukhumvit Soi 33 the quickest and easiest way is by Skytrain to Phrom Pong BTS, walk along the skywalk to exit 5 and Soi 33 is on the right hand side (the English pub The Londoner is on the corner). It is about a five minute walk in total from the BTS.
As the name perhaps suggests, Ocean Urban Lounge and Boutique Resort Club has chosen a beach club-slash-resort atmosphere. There are eight rooms, a restaurant, a bar and a club, and of course given its specialty of hosting pool parties, there is a fabulous pool as you might expect.
Ocean Club By Day and Night
During the day, the resort strives for a relaxed and chilled out vibe, making guests feel like they are away on a beach resort holiday rather than being in the middle of one of the world’s craziest cities. Oversized cushions are dotted around the pool to allow visitors to relax and make the most of the sunshine with soft beats playing gently in the background. Things are stepped up a little at night with blue lighting helping to create much more of a party atmosphere. The music here is good as well, and although it is a new club, they have already managed to persuade several world-class DJs to play.
Perhaps a little unusually for a club, food is also offered by Ocean, although perhaps that makes a little bit more sense as you remember they are aiming for a “resort” feel. Their dishes have an Asian/Mediterranean feel and are actually surprisingly good for the price – I recommend the pork teriyaki served in a sesame cone (B70 or B230 for four different types of cones) although I was a little envious of my companion’s deep-fried eggplant with miso and honey (B240).
More of what Ocean has to offer
Open daily from midday to midnight, Ocean Urban Lounge and Boutique Resort Club offers various events for different days of the week. Probably their most famous event is, Escape, which is the name of their Sunday afternoon pool party. Starting at 1pm, it is free entry, great tunes, free massages by the pool, free BBQ brunch next to the pool and all drinks are 100 baht making this a great way to finish off a weekend.
Other nights events are offered too, such as Saturday night Dream Pool parties, Full Moon parties – it is worth keeping an eye on their Facebook page for more details. Their Facebook page also has different offers and deals – such as on certain nights there will be special drinks promotions for ladies wearing a particular colour, or a certain drinks will be promoted that evening for a special price.
The clubs drinks list offers cocktails created by Joseph Boroski. The prices for cocktails start off at B150, which is very reasonable for a Sukhumvit based club. The names are creative and amusing from the the signature Ocean Club Cocktail (local spirit, lime, hibiscus, green peppercorn and egg, B150) or the perhaps aptly named Farang Martini (local spirit, guava, lime and ginger, B150). Mocktails and healthy juices are also available. The beer list is pretty extensive, too, with in addition to the usual brands you would expect to find in a club to the more trendy makes such as four types of Mikkeller (B380) and Duche de Longueville cider (B790).
Ocean Urban Lounge also offer happy hour six days a week (not on a Saturday) where all drinks are 100 baht from 12pm to 9pm. As one might expect for a club located on Sukhumvit, the crowd is predominantly expats at the present with a few hi-so Thais as well – given that the club has only been open a few months, I do expect the clientele to become more diverse as word gets around about the fun and themed pool party nights.
