It is fair to say that Royal City Avenue, or as it is more commonly known as, RCA, is probably Bangkok’s most popular and most well-loved clubbing spot. This is party central seven nights a week – perfect for those who have no need to sleep! It offers something for all – from massive concerts with worldwide DJs to smaller and more low key live gigs featuring local artists.
Open since July 2011, LED (formerly known as 808 Bangkok) is probably one of the more popular clubs found in the large RCA complex and is slowly but surely starting to give old favourite Route 66 a run for its money.
Music at LED
The club has a mammoth sound system and concentrates on playing a combination of current and old skool bass heavy commercial/electro tunes. However this is not set in stone – depending on the time and night you visit, and who the DJ of the hour is, he/she could be spinning vocal house and chart music, through to the latest dubsteb and techno.
Furthermore, the club goes all out to impress, offering, as per its name, a pretty fabulous lighting and visual display over the dance floor that really matches the heavy beat of the music. The combination of the amazing sound system and this light show (management claim they have the best sound system and light show in Bangkok and I have to say I am inclined to concur) helps to create an electric atmosphere – the ambience and the crowd are just buzzing.
Many famous DJs from around the world have played here including AKON, Boy George, Laidback Luke, Bob Sinclair and Richard Durand which gives credibility for this being a worthy club to visit over and above those nearby. They often also host DJ competitions featuring new and upcoming DJs from across Asia, giving you a great chance to hear the latest musical talents. Check out their Facebook page for the latest listing, or phone the manager on +66 86 860 0808 who is always more than happy to update fans on forthcoming events and promotions.
What LED offers
Given its location and competition from other fellow RCA based venues, the club offers some marvellous drinks promotions as an added incentive to entice clientele inside: on Friday nights, ladies can drink for free up until midnight and there is usually an often an open vodka bar for an hour on specially themed nights. Be sure also to “like” their Facebook page too, to be in with a change to win complimentary bottles of champagne or free VIP access. Other events like dance concerts offer a bit of added fun, and of course the chance to win more free drinks – always a plus!
The club tends to get really busy after midnight. It is possible to reserve tables/booths in advance and I would suggest that you do so if you want to be guaranteed a seat. There is seating both inside and outside of the club, together with waiter service.
The crowd are as you might expect fairly young and certainly the prettiest Thai girls seem to have a tendency to hang out here. They are of course also dressed to impress – do take note that the dress code is uber smart – definitely no flip flops/sportswear allowed! My only complaint is that I felt the wrong side of 30 when I visited, but that is my fault and by no means LED – for those into their music, this is probably one of the best clubs I have visited in Bangkok, purely for the light and sound system alone. The staff were also extremely friendly and attentive and our drinks orders arrived quickly, even when it was busy.
The club is open from 9.30pm until 2.30am (Friday and Saturday nights are the biggest and most popular). RCA is not the easiest place to get to in Bangkok with no nearby BTS or MRT. I suggest either taking a taxi directly there, or catching the MRT to Petchaburi, and then taking a bike or motorbike for the rest of the journey. LED is located inside Block A of RCA (the block closest to Rama 9 road).
